Jimmy Stewart’s birthday

I don’t know how this almost slipped past me, but today (PDT) is James “Jimmy” Stewart’s 100th birthday. That’s right, Jimmy was born May 20, 1908 and went on to star in some of the greatest movies of all time including It’s A Wonderful Life, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Rear Window, The Man Who Knew Too Much, and Anatomy of a Murder.

He’s also my favorite actor — ever.

Godspeed to you, James “Jimmy” Stewart.

  1. Jimmy Stewart was my parents’ fave also, partly because of his devotion to country — rising to Brig. Gen. in the U.S. Air Force.

I met JS once at Greenfield Village, MI. He was being given a VIP tour of the transplanted Alexander Graham Bell laboratory — and I was giving my visiting parents the peon tour of same. I brazenly walked up to Mr. Stewart (to the horror of bystanders) and explained that my military parents would love to meet him. So JS and my folks had a pleasant, private meet-and-greet. The highlight of their visit.

    Godspeed, indeed.

  2. That’s great you got to meet him. I remember when he died in July, 1997, I happened to drive by the Beverly Hills Presbyterian Church when they were holding a memorial service for him — traffic backed up on Santa Monica Blvd for miles. Here’s an obituary that goes into some detail about his life.

  3. Jimmy Stewart – 100 years old!

I think it’s great you siezed the opportunity to meet him. I’m sure your parents were thrilled too.

Just watched Rear Window upon Jill’s recommend during my son’s recoup. He was truly a great!

  4. Great dialogue in Rear Window, too. To wit:

Jeff: She sure is the “eat, drink and be merry” girl.
Stella: Yeah, she’ll wind up fat, alcoholic and miserable.
