“The Black List” (2007): Hollywood’s best unproduced screenplays

We’ve posted the “Top 101 Screenplays” as judged by the WGA and the Daily Variety’s 2008 list of “Ten Screenwriters to Watch.” There’s another list that has become quite popular since it’s unveiling back in 2005 — The Black List. The New York Times has some background on Franklin Leonard, the young production exec who was inspired to find out what his fellow development execs thought were the best unproduced scripts. I have a PDF of the 2007 Black List which you can access here. The 2008 list ought to be made public in December.
UPDATE: In comments, Tom notes that some of the movies on The Black List have been produced, among them Recount, which debuted on HBO last month and Jennifer’s Body, the next movie from Diablo Cody, which recently finished up principle photography in Vancouver. If anyone knows of other scripts on the list that have moved into production, please post here. I’ll check it out as well.

  1. There’s a large number of scripts in this list that are very similar to films that have been made. And I was struck by the number of log lines that weren’t high concept.

By the way, it may have been you, Scott, who a while back posted a list of scripts that at one time appeared on this Black List but had finally been produced. There were some good films in that finally-made-it list. Do you recall it?
