We’re protesting against PBS. Not because Barney the dinosaur has forever tainted the color purple. Or the fact that they can’t seem to decide: Masterpiece Theater or Mystery. No, it’s because they’ve dropped the seminal interview series The Power of Myth with Bill Moyers and Joseph Campbell from their catalog. Fortunately, some thoughtful soul has posted the first episode of the series, “The Hero’s Adventure,” to the Internet. Here is Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4. If you’re wondering what Joseph Campbell has to do with screenwriting, two words: George Lucas. As in Lucas used Campbell’s work to inform how he crafted Star Wars: A New Hope. And “The Hero’s Adventure” speaks directly to that subject. Part 5 is below. Here’s another great Campbell quote:
