Nanocrowd: The Movie Search Engine

Here’s a nifty website for movie lovers: Nanocrowd. What does it do?

Nanocrowd is a group of nerds who wondered about a couple things:

  • With all the viewer commentary about movies, why is it so hard to get a sense of what movies I’ll enjoy?
  • When I go to movie sites to find a movie, why don’t their recommendations make sense?

We decided to put those two things together and use movie commentary to recommend movies people would like.

Our approach is new and different. We write magical search algorithms that interpret comments people like you have written about movies. No editors. No movie critics. We analyze the millions of viewer comments from all over the Web to gain exciting insights into what movies are really about and what people think of them. Based on those insights, we find movies that you’d like to watch.

I gave it a test drive, selecting my favorite movie To Kill a Mockingbird. Clicked Go. Immediately brought up another page. On the left, they had a list of “Movies Most Like” which included A Time To Kill, Snow Falling on Cedars, Crash, Driving Miss Daisy, Philadelphia, Ghosts of Mississippi, and How Green Was My Valley. Below that, another list “Movies Least Like” which included Charlie’s Angels, Hudson Hawk, Jason X, Club Dread, and Final Destination 3. Then up top, they had other tabs you could click:

Lawyer, Gripping, Drama: Presumed Innocent, Jagged Edge, Runaway Jury and more.

Racism, Preachy, Prejudices: Do The Right Thing, Crash, American History X and more.

Heart-wrenching, Grave, Shaken: Manon of the Spring, Les Miserables, Atonement and more.

1940′s, Childhood, Sentimental: My Dog Skip, A Christmas Story, A Trip to Bountiful and more.

Brave, Thought-Provoking, Fear: The Truman Show, Brokeback Mountain, Divided We Fall and more.

Moral, Father, Childhood: A Bronx Tale, A Perfect World, The Kite Runner and more.

Each of the movies has a Crowd Rating, Crowd Size (presumably how popular the movie is with Nanocrowd responders), and its MPAA rating.

If you’re in the mood for a certain type of movie, it looks like Nanocrowd is a great way to surface possible titles.
