Screenwriting 101 — James V. Hart

“The secret, the great key to writing Hook, came from my son. When he was six, he asked the question, ‘What if Peter Pan grew up?’ I had been trying to find a new way into the famous ‘boy who wouldn’t grow up’ tale, and our son gave me the key. Our daughter, then three, ended up writing some of the best lines in Hook at age nine. So I listen to my kids. Even now, at ages eighteen and sixteen, our story meetings continue, and both have become distinguished writers and directors of theater in their respective schools.”

  1. Great. That lessens my mother guilt a bit. A friend of mine wrote a book for kids – I made my kid read it, then questioned her along the way…do you like that bit? How come? Do you think it would make a good movie too. Etc. Same goes for age relevant screenplays/TV show concepts. And not a month goes by without me asking…any ideas for a show? No? Okay, just checking.
