The story behind script coverage: Final thoughts

For over a week, I've been posting section by section the "ICM Story Department -- Coverage Packet." I've created a link under Lists where you can find all the posts. Also you can access an electronic version of the entire document there in three parts: Overview, General Coverage Examples, Extended Coverage Examples.

If you only take away two thoughts from this discussion, let them be these:

* Script readers vary in age, backgrounds, interests, and experience, but they are all human beings. The best way to cut through all the crap associated with the screenplay-script reading process is to create story concepts, plots, and characters that will grab the reader, compel them to keep reading, and make them feel something.

* To maximize the commercial viability of your spec script, start with a great story concept.

What did you come away with from this foray into the world of the script reader?

I have learned to LOVE script readers. Hopefully someday, they'll return the favor...

To put my best foot forward while entertaining the hell out of them.

To quote a wise man: Rule #1 -- Make It Not Suck! And never bore the reader.
