THE SCREENWRITING BLOG OF THE BLACK LIST

"Ten faces igniting movie buzz"

On Sunday, the LA Times “Calendar” section came out with one of those listy lists again: This one “Ten faces igniting movie buzz.” Not sure how many folks outside the 101-10-405-110 Hwood bubble are frothing at these faces, but I’ll say this: They’re all involved in interesting projects:

Demetri Martin

Carey Mulligan

Pierre Morel

Chris Hemsworth

Matt Reeves

Lynn Shelton

Christopher Waltz

Laeta Kalogridis

Neil Blomkamp

H.P. Lovecraft

I’ve already fawned over Demetri Martin here. So let me gush over someone else: Neil Blomkamp and the movie District 9. I saw the trailer for the first time this weekend and it is totally cool. Basic plot summary from IMDB:

An extraterrestrial race forced to live in slum-like conditions on Earth suddenly find a kindred spirit in a government agent that is exposed to their biotechnology.

Peter Jackson of Lord of the Rings fame is one of the movie’s producers. Check out the trailer:

This is Blomkamp’s first directing gig (he also co-wrote the movie’s screenplay) and if the cool documentary feel of the trailer is any indication of his creative chops, then we could be in for a treat on August 14th when the movie debuts here in the States.

Anybody else intrigued by District 9?

  1. Great article. I espeically enjoyed the inclusion of H.P. Lovecraft. It would be great if we could cycle past the Torture Porn that's filled horror for the last decade or so and see some really eerie, unnerving films.

  2. Just discovered Dmitri Martin per my wife's nagging…"seriously, Jeff, he's YOUR kind of comic…" So I finally caught his show on Comedy Central… undeniable genius at work. Reminds me of a young George Carlin in his sort of outside-in way of looking at the world.

  3. I cannot tell you how long I've been waiting for this. When I first saw the short, I thought it was the most genius thing I'd ever seen. Then they said they were making a full movie out of it!?? I didn't think it would ever happen. But it has!

The only thing I'll say about Bloomkamp is that he's not really interested in narrative. This works for short films. But a 2 hour movie needs to have a story. And I'm a little nervous as to whether he was able to give it one. Still, this was always my number one anticipated movie of the summer. Can't wait!
