Foote, who made a career of adapting books and plays into movies, including To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), Hurry Sundown (1967), and The Trip to Bountiful (1985), wrote Tender Mercies as an original screenplay. And check out where he talks about how he lured Duval to do the movie.
