I originally posted this [see below] last September. Here are three updates:
* There is another pay website that tracks script and movie development called The Tracking Board. It’s annual cost is $49.
* Mystery Man on Film has evolved into a Twitter feed – and it’s amazing what items he picks up that are screenwriting and movie related. So I would definitely recommend following his Tweets. Go here to do that.
* Beginning next year, the Daily Variety online will be available only to subscribers. I’ll still continue to track news per that site, but will no longer link to it, instead using the Hollywood Reporter and other Hwood news sites.
Of course, there are tons of screenwriting and movie blogs. I’ve got links to many of them on my Blogroll and Friends list. And other free resources on my Resources list.
If there are other paid services or free sites you think I should know about, please let me know in comments.
A screenwriter needs to stay abreast with what’s going on in Hollywood. Fortunately, there is a ton of information available nowadays about the entertainment business. Here are some online resources:
Baseline offers The Studio System which covers:
- Film and TV Artist Credits
- Development & Production Data
- Talent Representation
- Performance and Financial Data
- Entertainment Company Directory
- Celebrity Biographies
- Notes, Searches, and Preferences
- My Lists and Templates
- Film and TV Titles
It’s pricey ($3K per year), so Baseline also offers FilmTracker for $59.95 per month, which covers movie development news.
If you’re just interested in what’s selling — and you should be — a good, inexpensive resource is Done Deal Pro. That’s only $23.95 per year.
To cover what scripts are being submitted by what agencies and generally the flow of material around town, there is Tracking Board. That rings in at $69 per year.
Then there’s the Hollywood Creative Directory, which offers a bunch of products:
* Hollywood Creative Directory
* Hollywood Representation Directory
* Hollywood Distribution Directory
* Hollywood Creative Directory online
If your focus is television, there’s CableU and TV Tracker.
And, of course, there’s Daily Variety and the Hollywood Reporter, commonly referred to as “the trades.”
And let’s not forget websites like Box Office Guru, Box Office Mojo, and Box Office Prophets. They’re all great resources — and what’s more, they’re free.
So tons of information resources available. Or you can just come here. I’ve got access to virtually all of these and check them regularly.
And if you know of some helpful web resources, please post in comments.

This is great. Do you recommend any producing sites? Producer types to follow?
Totally PC, I've got one in particular in my Resources list I really like:
http://www.indieproducer.net/
I know the folks who started it up several years back and they're good people. It's a good place to do some networking, even outside of LA.
I'd say this is a good time for shameless self-promotion.
At least one of my posts was recommended by UNK and another by MM and a third by Billy Mernit (well he just liked a term I used – fluff pay but substance lasts).
