TotalFilm.com wrangled some reflections out of writer-director Terry Gilliam in this very cool piece “Movie-By-Move: Terry Gilliam. The movies are:
Monty Python And The Holy Grail (1975)
Jabberwocky (1977)
Time Bandits (1981)
Brazil (1985)
The Adventures Of Baron Munchausen (1988)
The Fisher King (1991)
Twelve Monkeys (1995)
Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas (1998)
The Brothers Grimm (2005)
Tideland (2005)
The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus (2009)
Love Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Time Bandits, Brazil, and The Fisher King.
Speaking of The Fisher King [note the slick segue] here’s my goofy Terry Gilliam story. When Siegel & Myers had an overall deal with Warner Bros., we had an office in the Fred Astaire Bldg. on the old MGM lot in Culver City. One day, this guy pokes his head inside and asks, “Is one of you Scott Myers?” I said yes. He said, “Are you the Scott Myers that knows Terry Gilliam?” I said, “No, but I’m the Scott Myers who’d like to know Terry Gilliam.”
Gilliam was shooting some scenes for The Fisher King in one of the studio’s soundstages. Gilliam and this fellow, a producer on the movie, happened by the Fred Astaire Bldg. and saw my name on the directory outside. And apparently Gilliam knows some other Scott Myers.
Here’s the goofy part. We got to chatting with this producer and he offered to take us into the soundstage to meet Terry. So off we trotted across the lot. Into the soundstage. And there they were — Gilliam, Jeff Bridges, and Robin Williams. How great, right? I get to meet Terry Gilliam, have a few laughs about the whole “Scott Myers” thing. Except… things weren’t going very well on the set at that moment. Pretty tense actually.
So producer guy gives us a wink and ushers us outside. “Maybe tomorrow,” he says.
And of course, tomorrow never came.
In the small world department, it turns out that Robin Williams was here at Trailblazer Studios yesterday – along with John Travolta. They were shooting promos for their new movie Old Dogs:
Two friends and business partners find their lives turned upside down when strange circumstances lead to them being placed in the care of 7-year-old twins.
Then there’s that time that Travolta came to see my comedy act at Charlie’s in Ventura, CA. But that’s another goofy story…

Cool insider story, Scott. Thanks for sharing.

I've always loved Terry Gilliam movies, just a fun uniqueness to them. Fantasy/science/symbolism/hilarity all balled into one. But then he can turn around and make a movie like twelve monkeys.
And Monty Python is what started it all.
That's a cool story.
Gilliam is probably one of my favorite directors. I mean Brazil is for sure in my top 10 movies of all time and Fisher King is just a great movie, human, heartfelt and magical.
That's so sad that nobody in Hollywood dares to give him the chances to make the movie that he wants anymore.
Anyway, looking forward to watch his latest film with the late Heath Ledger.
Thanks for this.
Gilliam is one of the few directors I enjoy hearing talk about his films. His insights and anecdotes are always fascinating (and sometimes cautionary).
