Pitch sale: "What Boys Want"

New Line picks up comedy pitch “What Boys Want” from writers Amy Andelson and Emily Meyer:

Story centers on a teenage girl who can hear what men are thinking. Allen Fisher of Principato-Young and Gomez’s mother, Mandy Teefey, will exec produce.

Take What Women Want (2000), gender-bend the Protagonist (female instead of male), make her a teenager, cast teen star Selena Gomez, and voila – you have a movie.

Similar but different, similar but different, similar but different…

  1. seriously?? yeah, sure, do all that as a first-timer and find yourself sued by Nancy Meyers…

how did this get approval from Legal – and with that title?!? did i miss something? are the producers from WHAT WOMEN WANT involved in production or participation??

  2. How the hell is this going to work at all? Did it not occur to anyone that a teenage girl really – REALLY – should not be hearing what boys want, or more specifically, what boys want to do?

  3. I get creeped out by what random men SAY to me or my friends or other women on the street – I don't want to know what they're *thinking*, and I can't imagine it would be that pleasant for a teenage girl, either.

  4. What's funny is that this premise is so shamelessly borrowed that it's unique.

Did anybody else notice how What Women Want was structured in such a way that it actually lacked female subjectivity? I always thought that was a little ironic.

  5. I actually like this idea more than the one used in "What Women Want," which was a pretty good movie in its own right.

Dude and dudette's — it's all about what NEW IDEAS Amy Andelson and Emily Meyer bring to the table. The comparision to "What Women Want" is automatic. NOW the real question is the set pieces and situations the teenage girl who can read boys minds get into.

From a high concept vantage point I can totally see why New Line picked this pitch up.
