THE SCREENWRITING BLOG OF THE BLACK LIST

Daily Dialogue contest

As any of you who are regular GITS readers know, I start off each day on this blog with something I call Daily Dialogue. It’s a (hopefully) an interesting side of dialogue from a movie that I’ve seen to (hopefully) inspire each of us and get our creative juices flowing.

The only other ‘rule’ I’ve had is not to repeat myself. I don’t know how long I’ll keep up this blog, but since I’ve seen thousands of movies, I figure I ought to be able to do DD for years w/o hitting the same movie twice.

But then I had a thought: I wonder if any of you would like the opportunity to select the Daily Dialogue. I do get the occasional suggestion via email. Why not let someone else have a whack at the DD feature?

So I’m willing to give this a whirl to gauge interest. Here’s the deal: I’m dangling the possibility of a GITS reader to decide a week’s worth of Daily Dialogues, based upon the most clever theme (as judged by me). So if you’re interested, come up with a theme around which you can post dialogue from 7 movies, and as long as (A) you can forward me the dialogue and (B) there is a clip or trailer from the movie on YouTube, I’m more than happy to let you program a week’s worth of Daily Dialogues. And I’ll do all the grunt work (i.e., prepping each post).

By theme, I mean anything. It could be “Movies That Start With the Letter B,” or “Movies That Star Midgets,” or “Movies That Have The Word ‘Gold’ In Their Title.” I’m open to anything – as long as it’s clever.

So post your theme and 7 movie titles in comments, and let’s see what happens. Who knows what will happen? I could post this and get the virtual equivalent of crickets chirping in the ‘audience.’ But if people like the idea, I’ll be thrilled to open up the whole Daily Dialogue thing to readers on a recurring basis.

Up to you. Post a theme and 7 movies in comments for the chance to program Daily Dialogue for an entire week!

  1. How about a week of silly dialog to inspire comedic writing?
Example: " I don't drink water. It rusts pipes and fish make love in it." (Marcus Brody, Raiders of the lost ark)

  2. How about "best lines spoken by a power hungry comic book villains!" You know, that last bit of dialog they give usually when they are close to their death! Where they go on and on…or any cool line of dialog spoken by a villain where their thirst for power is revealed.

Ming the Merciless (Max von Sydow) has some great lines in Flash Gordon (1980)! Heres a taste of the kind of dialog Ming spews:

"Pathetic earthlings. Hurling your bodies out into the void, without the slightest inkling of who or what is out there. If you had known anything about the true nature of the universe, anything at all, you would've hidden from it in terror."

Skeletor(Frank Langela) in Masters of the Universe (1987)!

Judge Doom (Christopher Loyd)in Who framed Roger Rabit? (1988)- gotta love that great speach he gives about building highways with billboards as far as the eye can see!

General Zod in Superman II (1980)

Bill the Butcher in Gangs of New York (2002)

Obediah Stan (Jeff Bridges) in Iron Man (2008)

Top Dollar (Michael Wincott) in The Crow (1994)

  3. Movies about movies or the movie biz.

    Sunset Boulevard
    Bowfinger
    The Player
    After The Fox
    Living In Oblivion
    The Stunt Man
    Hooper

To suggest a few, open to more …

  4. Dying Words… A character's final dying words, some I kind of cheated, with others speaking, or just a tense/emotional death.

    Léon
    Million Dollar Baby
    One Eight Seven
    Devil’s Own
    Scarface
    Vertical Limit
    Last Castle
People vs Larry Flynt (not really dying words, but an emotional death scene)

    Others but previously used movies:
    Legends of the Fall
    Titanic
    Big Fish

  5. Well, I'm not sure whether this is a valid theme or not, but the following are 7 movies that make me feel really good to watch:

    -Beautiful Girls
    -High Fidelity
    -Forgetting Sarah Marshall
    -Dogma
    -Mr. Deeds
    -Groundhogs Day
    -Home for the Holidays

    Thanks for listening.

  6. Movies written (or in the case of Lady Sings the Blues, co-written) by women. I tried for a variety…

    E.T. The Extra Terrestrial
    The Piano
    Monsoon Wedding
    Lady Sings the Blues
    The Savages
    Running On Empty
    Clueless
