A few weeks back, I was fortunate enough to make the acquaintance of Trevor Hogg who contributes to a great UK-based blog Flickering Myth Movie Blog. Trevor, who lives near Toronto, sent me a note about the first part of a profile he’s posted on FM here:
I thought you might be interested in profile on an Oscar-winning writer who was also the second woman to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director – Jane Campion (hopefully Kathryn Bigelow will become number four). Part Two will arrive on Dec. 30th.
The profile is excellent and reminds us that Campion brings a writer’s sensibilities to her directing. Consider her many screenwriting-directing credits:
An Exercise in Discipline – Peel (1982)
Passionless Moments (1983)
A Girl’s Own Story (1984)
After Hours (1984)
Sweetie (1989)
The Piano (1993)
Holy Smoke (1999)
In the Cut (2003)
The Water Diary (2006)
Bright Star (2009)
The Piano became a worldwide phenomenon, garnering 3 Academy Awards including Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen.
Here is the trailer for Campion’s latest movie Bright Star, based on the three-year romance between 19th century poet John Keats and Fanny Brawne, which was cut short by Keats’ untimely death at age 25:
Trevor says he’ll be posting the 2nd part of the profile on Campion on 12/30. And while you’re at it, be sure to bookmark Flickering Myth.
