From THR:
Bottom Line: A titanic entertainment — movie magic is back!A dozen years later, James Cameron has proven his point: He is king of the world.
As commander-in-chief of an army of visual-effects technicians, creature designers, motion-capture mavens, stunt performers, dancers, actors and music and sound magicians, he brings science-fiction movies into the 21st century with the jaw-dropping wonder that is “Avatar.” And he did it almost from scratch.
Fantastic review.
UPDATE: A pseudo-review from The Guardian.
UPDATE #2: Some Twitter reactions from folks who saw the premiere in London. Fox has had an embargo in place re reviews.

I think when it comes to blockbusters, we can expect some filmmakers to cause us disheartening pain (re Michael Bay), in that we feel if we write great stuff, it will be trumped by special effects. I think many expected the same from the next big blockbuster, Avatar. However, we've had 12 years to forget Mr. Cameron's brilliance, and I think, according to the reaction so far, we'll be reinvigorated. I'm not necessarily on the same page as him re 3D, but maybe he'll prove me wrong. I think he'll prove a lot of things.
And as a sidenote, I love James Cameron because he has the pride to turn down a project he built from the ground up (Terminator 3…crap), because he didn't see any further story. He already proved he could do even better with a sequel, but he knew that would be the end.
Welcome back Mr. Cameron.
And the funny thing is that the story is actually old. I bet that Cameron put his signature on it. I can say that the new 3D camera works VERY WELL and that's without the glasses.
It's the old "I've spent time with them and can't look at them the same anymore."
Amazingly enough this was also District 9.
Hmmmm….
