Monday, noting the trades hadn't reported it yet. Now
they have:
Summit Entertainment and Participant Media are teaming on "Invasion," snapping up a Ben Magid's sci-fi spec script. "Invasion" is described as a sci-fi action movie with an environmental theme. Logline's under wraps.
This is the second project I've seen recently involving Participant Media -- the other being
The Crazies -- that seems to stray from their roots - as noted
here in a previous post:
Participant believes that a good story well told can truly make a difference in how one sees the world. Whether it is a feature film, documentary or other form of media, Participant exists to tell compelling, entertaining stories that also create awareness of the real issues that shape our lives.
We seek to entertain our audiences first, then to invite them to participate in making a difference next. Participant believes that people are basically good and that everyone deserves the chance to be a participant!
Known for high-minded, "progressive" movies including
Good Night and Good Luck (2005), North Country (2005), Syriana (2005), An Inconvenient Truth (2006), Fast Food Nation (2006), The Visitor (2007), The Kite Runner (2007), and Charlie Wilson's War (2007), it makes one wonder if they are dumping their initial guiding philosophy -- or just stretching their brand into more entertainment-first projects.

Sounds like they are thinking about the bottom line.
Nothing wrong with making genre pics in order to keep making art films.
Something for everybody.
An email swept through the tracking boards this morning with a bunch of film development updates (I'll post it at blog.itsonthegrid.com in a bit), one of which was yet another commercial property in development at Participant: An "Untitled Contamination Ghost Story," which the Pastor brothers have been assigned to write.
