I’ll be starting to post responses to your questions tomorrow at 3PM PST (U.S.), continuing each day until we’re through this next round. So if you any inquiries about screenwriting or the movie business, feel free to post them in comments here or email me:

As usual, I’m happy to offer my two cents, then open up the discussion to all GITS readers.

hey,
i'm wondering about the use of scene headings and shots. ive read some screenplays, mainly by the coen bros, where instead of using int/ext or day/night- they will simply write the scene heading and or just use a shot. like….
LUNDEGAARD KITCHEN or INSIDE A CAR or PARKING LOT or SNOW FALLING
Then they will go into the scene description. I think this really helps the flow of the script and I was wondering if when writing a spec script I can get away with not using ext/int or day/night. instead just writing something like:
"INSIDE JOHN'S HOUSE
A cleaning lady does the dishes in the kitchen."
And, when can you get away with starting a scene with just a shot like:
"A KETTLE OF WATER BOILS
The whistle grows louder and louder. John comes into the kitchen and turns off the stove."
Thanks!
