THE SCREENWRITING BLOG OF THE BLACK LIST

Weekly Gems

Some stories I saved for the weekend. First Susan Bridges from The Scriptwriters Network forwarded me this NY Times link: “A Peek Into Netflix Queues”:

Examine Netflix rental patterns, neighborhood by neighborhood, in a dozen cities. Some titles with distinct patterns are Mad Men, Obsessed and Last Chance Harvey

Cities you can check out: New York, Boston, Chicago, Washington DC, Bay Area, LA, Seattle, Minneapolis, Denver, Atlanta, Dallas, Miami. See what you and your neighbors are watching on NettFlix.

Next TotalFilm.com conjectures “12 Plots For The District 9 Prequel”. One of my favorites:

District 8

The Plot: In the wake of the opening of the alien ship, the people of Johannesburg are gripped with paranoia and fear.

In response, a terrible new law is passed that leads to the savage and blood-splattered Joho witch trials. As the Joho population become fearful that aliens have the ability to take over human bodies or assume human form, McCarthyism unfurls in bloody Technicolor.

The witch trials spiral out of control, and a concentration camp dubbed District 8 is established. Here, people who are thought to be infected with alien diseases are sent to be dealt with, Guantanamo Bay-style.

Most Awesome Scene: The D8 detainees are lined up in the cafeteria for what they think is their final meal. It ends up being their final resting place. Set to the strains of a tragic Operatic classic.

Starring: A cast of unknowns.

Finally Christopher Nolan provides some insight into his upcoming movies Inception on the wonderful LA Times blog “Hero Complex”. Two quotes:

“I grew up watching James Bond films and loving those and watching spy movies with their globetrotting sensibility…. We get to do that here, not just geographically but also in time and dimensions of reality as well. We get to make a movie that’s expansive, I suppose you’d say, in four dimensions.”

“This is the biggest challenge I’ve taken on to this point,” said Nolan, who may return to Gotham City for his next feature. “We’re trying to tell a story on a massive scale, a true blockbuster scale – the biggest I’ve ever been involved with. We tried to make a very large-scale film with ‘The Dark Knight’ and with this one we wanted to push that even further.”

Can’t embed the latest Inception trailer, but here is the link.

  1. Some of the District 9 prequels would be great to see if someone could find a way to make them with a really low budget.
Some powerful and hilarious ideas in there that deserve to be realized for internet distribution
